Ram Fights Steam Demo Review
Verdict: Maybe
I booshed a bull, played a cockerel with invisible armour, and never once saw a crystal.
Ram Fights kept me for twenty-five minutes, mostly on a ram and briefly on a cockerel, and three of those minutes were spent watching it crash. It is a physics-based brawler from Doomers Entertainment where you build an animal, charge at the other animals, and win when their horns fall off. I picked it up because the pitch is absurd and that is usually enough for me.
Maybe. The absurd premise is enough on its own, and the Coliseum chaos round was the moment the demo earned its pitch. The controls could use a bit more skill than a bull doing a roly-poly onto people; stamina, more moves, reasons to pick between them. The three crashes get in the way. I can see something for it, like a party multiplayer or a stream game, and one or two nights with other people is where it sits for me. On my own I would not go out of my way to come back. You would need the servers live with enough players on them, or a story mode, before this would stick.
Pros
- The paint studio is funny straight away.
- The Coliseum chaos round is where the absurd pitch finally lands.
Cons
- Crashed three times, always at the exact moment the fight was about to load.
- Crystals Only did not show me a single crystal across two rounds.
- Armour is visible on the ram and invisible on the cockerel.
- Fell through the stadium map mid-round.
What is Ram Fights?
Ram Fights is a physics-based brawler where you build an animal, charge at other animals at speed, and knock their horns off until one is left standing. There is not a lot hiding behind that. I came up on it browsing new demos and committed on the spot, because the pitch is absurd and that is usually enough for me. Going in, I was mostly wondering whether absurd was going to be enough on its own.
What can you do in the demo?
The pre-match screen hit me with more options than I had the patience to read. Two maps, Pasture and Arena. Solo or Teams. Number of bots. Difficulty. And then a mode, where I had to pick one of Clear, With Points, Crystals Only, and a couple of others. I picked Crystals Only without reading what it meant, and I would come to regret that. I went solo first and did not try the online side, because this is a pre-release demo and I doubted anyone would be on it.
Before each match you drop into the paint-your-animal studio, which the game calls the Stable. Mine came out black with red on his chest. Boy's on fire. There are two currencies here. Skill points for upgrades and skin points for cosmetics, and I had none of either to start, so the helmet and the armour both sat behind a lock. A few rounds in I had enough to kit the ram out, and that was fine on the ram; it would be less fine on the cockerel later. The one bit of the UI that annoyed me from the first minute to the last was the rainbow wiggling font. It is only on the Leave Feedback button on the main menu, and because it is only one button I was willing to let it slide. The rest of the UI has the same not-quite-landed feel though. The graphics do not fit together with each other, and the style is doing a lot without picking a tone. Not a fan.
Did it crash?
The first fight loaded, dropped me in, and crashed to desktop. I had joked in the half-second before it crashed that if it broke this could end up being a very quick review, and the game called my bluff. I set the same bots and the same map up again. Same crash in the same place. Third attempt it held. All three crashes landed at the exact moment the fight was about to start, which to me points at the fight-load itself being heavy rather than my computer being under extra load from streaming and recording in parallel. The game kept my paint between restarts, which was polite of it under the circumstances.
What does a match look like?
Once in, the controls were less hard than unintuitive, which is partly on me for skipping the tutorial. Shift speeds you up, you steer the camera with the mouse, and the keyboard moves you. It takes a little bit of time to get your speed up, and a lot of my first round was running laps around the arena, building momentum before I tried to land a hit, missing on the way, and running laps again. Then his horns fell off, then another's, and the round was over on that. This is so dumb. The horns falling off is funny every time it happens, and I was happy to watch it keep happening. Between booshes there is not much else going on, mind. You run at things, their horns come off at some point, and that is the round.
Next round I turned the bots up and switched to Arena, which is a Coliseum-shaped stadium with a sanded pit in the middle. This is where the demo stopped being passable and started being funny. There is a bull in there, head and shoulders bigger than any of the rams, and a cow who outclassed me more than once and then suplexed me. Bovine bullying. There are vegetables lying around the ring too, which I had not expected, and at one point I hit a cabbage and it went flying into a goat. In the chaos round it finally plays like an Action game. You get some speed up, headbutt a shoulder, something ragdolls across the ring, and now and again you knock the horns right off.
What about Crystals Only?
Then I tried Crystals Only on the same map, and I did not see a crystal. The scoreboard said collect three crystals. First round I ran laps and checked corners. Second round I did more laps, more corners, parkour on the stadium walls to kill time, and still nothing. Then I ended up on top of the stadium somehow and fell through the map. Falling through the map is less than ideal. I did manage to take an opponent out from off-map, which is both amusing and a bit worrying for the geometry. I never worked out whether the mode is bugged, whether crystals spawn on a trigger I missed, or whether the demo just does not do that one yet.
What about the cockerel?
With the ram wrung out I went back to the roster and picked the cockerel. It did not go well. His neck is cartoonishly long and does not make any sense. The armour I bought him was invisible, which was a sore point on the ram already (cool armour only shows up on the ram) and worse on an animal that is not winning on looks. He is also far too lightweight for a fight that is about mass meeting mass; I don't think we are heavy enough to do any damage at all. There are different moves bound to the number keys with cooldowns, and switching between them is probably the closest this game gets to strategy. On the cockerel they still do not land hard enough to matter, and I spent the rest of his time wishing I was back on the ram. Across every animal I tried, the ram was the most versatile; the others felt pretty similar at the point of connection, except for the cockerel being too light for the game it is in.
Is it fun with other people?
The Multiplayer side I did not test. The screen asked for another player before it would even start a match with bots, so I gave up quickly and went back to single-player. Once the servers are up and the players turn out, I think playing online would be funny. I never got the chance to find out.
